PROGRESS!

Post by panzergator »

For the first time in YEARS, spent the morning doing something with GHQ besides buying and storing. Straightened barrels, expanded pinholes for 15 AS90s and 16 Panzerhaubitzen, then placed them in their respective motor pools, along with their command and control vehicles. Three batteries AS90s (24 pieces) and 2 batteries Panzerhaubitz (16 pieces). Also organized the last Stryker company for the First Stryker Battalion and determined what it still needs to complete its TOE. LOTS to do yet, but it is a start. AND that stuff has yet to be painted. May need to invest in a new airbrush. Recommendations welcome.

Pictures or it didn't happen! Well done, PG! I really enjoy the organizing and planning part of building units. My problem is that I am always planning for bigger and bigger projects that I don't have time or money for. I will be focusing on certain key units for GHQ vehicles and just printing the other less critical units.

Pictures are beyond my ken. I will send some to Chris. Perhaps he can post for me when he has time. I'd be mire enthusiastic about pics if I could get the painting done. I am always projecting beyond my budget. Then the planning and paring begin. Then the realistic strikes. Or the distraction. Suddenly, I need an ONTOS platoon!

Gator,

If you are looking for airbrush recommendations, I've tried several over the years:
I started with a badger 200. it's good basic airbrush for base coating and most scenery uses. It uses suction to draw the paint up through a siphon hose into the airbrush. After having a couple of bottles of paint drop out and break, I decided that a dunklegelb and schwartzgrau floor was not going to make kitchen 6 very happy.

Next I bought a couple of the Chinese Iwata knockoffs from master airbrush. They were cheap and it showed. Biggest issue I had was that there were some obvious QC issues in terms of mismatched needles and nozzles. One also came with a factory installed pressure leak someplace, which was probably a cracked nozzle or body. You get what you pay for.

I settled on an Iwata Revolution CR which is my go to now. It works well with most mediums including scenic cement from woodland scenics. I also have an Iwata HP B+ which I use for detail work such as camo. They've been going strong going on 20 years now.

They are relatively expensive although you can find them on sale on Amazon occasionally as well through some hobby and art stores. Michigan Toy Soldier has a 10% discount if you set up an account with them and they also hold 10% off sales a lot weekends so you can get 20% off which isn't too bad.

Initially I used canned air which got expensive fast. I bought a garage compressor which worked pretty good but was very noisy, so I sucked it up and bought an art model which has adjustable air pressure and more importantly was quiet.

A good compressor makes a huge difference as well. Make sure the compressor has a pressure regulator with a gauge and moisture trap. The master airbrush compressor I have works pretty good and was around $100.
